Heart surgery team of Dr. Saurabh Juneja (Chief Cardiac & Vascular Surgeon), Dr. Firdoos Ahmed Mir (Consultant Cardiac Surgeon) & Dr. Pankaj Ingole (Cardiac Anesthetist) at Metro Hospital Faridabad performed a minimally-invasive cardiac surgery on a 14-year-old girl from Kashmir for a large OS ASD (Atrial Septal Defect). Minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) has recently been applied in the management of intracardiac lesions (to obviate the morbidity associated with sternotomy). To give cosmetic and psychological benefit, patient was operated through MICS technique. Keyhole surgery was performed with incision of 2.5 inches.
The safety & reproducibility of MICS depend on the availability of experienced cardiac surgery team which includes surgeons & anesthesiologist, who can easily perform TEE & interpret ECHO findings. Availability of minimal assess retractors and relevant instruments that facilitate the operation and most importantly availability of surgeon experienced in minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
Dr. Saurabh Juneja said that MICS offers the cosmetic advantage specially in young females, reduced post operative pain, faster recovery, improved post operative respiratory function from preservation of sternum and the integrity of the costal margin, it can be performed with the same degree of ease and speed as a conventional operation with no difference in mortality. It provides access to the relevant parts of the heart and reduces dissection of other areas.
Benefits of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery
- Less infections
- Less blood loss
- Cosmetically better, almost scar less
- Reduced trauma & post operative pain
- Early Resumption of Work within 4 to 6 days.
Dr. S.S Bansal, Sr. Interventional Cardiologist & M.D said that major advances in heart disease treatment have made a great impact in the lives of patients; he further added that we have the best cardiac surgery team which ensures that all procedures are performed with high quality and safety.
