A 3 year old child came to the Metro Hospital Faridabad with a hope to be treated with a laparoscopic procedure for the blockage in her ureter, this procedure is called Pyeloplasty. The child was suffering from obstruction at the junction of the urine collecting system of the kidney with the ureter leading to pain in back and poor drainage of the kidney.
Parents of the child have consulted various doctors in big hospitals, but everybody suggested an open surgery for her condition, which parents do not want as open surgery has its own limitations and leaves long scar which is undesirable in a female child. After initial investigations, she was operated laparoscopically with three keyhole incisions by Dr. Anup Gulati, Senior Consultant Urology, Faridabad.
PUJ or as is commonly known as the junction of the kidney with draining tube ureter is obstructed by birth in some children. This surgery requires removal of blockage and re-joining of the kidney with ureter. In children because of small working area laparoscopy is a difficult task, hence this surgery is mostly done by open surgery. Laparoscopic pyeloplasty in children has been proven to be safe and effective, with comparable results to open surgery.
Open pyeloplasties typically result in a five- to a seven-day hospital stay, and several weeks of recovery. In comparison, children and adolescents who have a laparoscopic pyeloplasty have shorter stay of 2 to 3 days in hospital, experience much less pain.
Dr. Anup Gulati who is a trained and experienced Urologist with exceptional laparoscopic skills performed the laparoscopic pyeloplasty surgery of this child giving her benefit of minimal pain, early mobility, and nil scarring. He has performed many complex urological surgeries as well as routine urological surgeries such as surgery for stone, prostate, birth abnormalities and laparoscopic surgeries.
